I am very interested in the area of your research concerning structure and function of nuclear lamina and I would like to be considered for a postdoctoral position in your laboratory. Given the opportunity, I would like to continue my strongly determined and motivated research efforts in cell and molecular biology. I am particularly interested to work on the specific functions of the lamins in the chromatin organization and performance. My previous stay at the Insitute for Cell Biology, Oxford University (Director: Prof. Dr. Gerald Frank), first as a PhD student and later on as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (see my CV) allowed me to gain extensive knowledge in the molecular cell biology and biochemistry and learn a wide spectrum of techniques that can be applied to study nuclear envelope and chromatin. I worked on the nuclear function of cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins, which is the favorite scientific concept of Dr. Frank. My studies in this field emerged a number of publications: 11 published and several in preparation. At this point of my career I feel a necessity for greater exposure to world-class scientific research and intellectually stimulating environment which I believe your lab will provide.

I am very interested in the area of your research concerning cryo-electron microscopy in the structural biology, and I am eager to work at this multidisciplinary edge of cell biology. I am currently a post-doctoral fellow and member of the scientific staff of the Max-Planck-Institute of Genetics, Berlin, Germany, where I have worked for the last 7 years in the department of Prof. Dr. Yaohan Shwarc and which will be closed with his retirement on August 30, 2000. I received my Ph.D. degree at Berlin University in 1997. I have a strong practical and theoretical background in the biochemistry and molecular cell biology. I am familiar with different electron and fluorescent microscopy techniques, and I studied physic and mathematic at the Moscow State University. The focus of both my Ph.D. and postdoctoral research has been the study of the structure and function of the cytoskeleton with special emphasis on the potential involvement of cytoplasmic and nuclear intermediate filament proteins in nuclear processes (chromatin organization and gene expression, replicative cycle of endogenous retrotransposons, DNA recombination, repair and replication, telomere biology), mitochondrial processes (mtDNA replication and repair, biochemical housekeeping) and cell physiology (senescence, cell immortalization/transformation).
